"Initiatives of this nature are expected to be planned well ahead of the election," said Chief Electoral Officer of Canada Marc Mayrand. "Parties are consulted, to avoid any confusion and to give them an opportunity to raise any possible concerns so that these may be considered and, where appropriate, addressed prior to conducting such initiatives." - Elections Canada
And according to Elections Canada, the event at the University of Guelph was NOT pre-authorized, therefore it should not have taken place to begin with. The Returning Officer organized the vote to encourage the student vote.
Also, according to Elections Canada, because the voting process was done in an organized fashion and in a way that respected Canada's Elections Act, the votes are valid. The Conservative Party of Canada have said they will honour their ruling. But Elections Canada makes it clear that the Special Ballot at the University will not continue in any similar form.
"Once Elections Canada officials were made aware of the local initiative in Guelph, the returning officer was instructed not to engage in any further activities of a similar nature. All returning officers have received this instruction." - Elections Canada
"Elections Canada spokesman John Enright said that although (Returning Officer) Ms. Budra’s efforts were “well-intentioned,” they were not pre-authorized by Elections Canada, nor were the parties given enough warning." - The Globe and Mail
Michael Sona, the Director of Communications for Guelph Conservative candidate Marty Burke has taken a lot of heat in the media for allegedly trying to "steal" the ballot box according to the report by the Guelph Mercury. Back to my initial point, Lets not put Sona down in order to make the other party's look good. If we are to pin-point and blame the Conservatives for a ruling that stated that the voting event at the University of Guelph was not pre-authorized, then I guess this is a way the Liberals tried to distract the voters from a dismal performance by Ignatieff in the Leaders debate. Let's not blame the Conservatives, as Ignatieff has stated as anti-democratic, but lets get our facts straight. If you want to talk about being anti-democratic, how about putting on an election that was unauthorized and according to the Guelph Mercury, having partisan election material on display near the ballot box. I'm sure thats what Ignatieff was talking about when he related this event to Egypt and Syria. You know, kind of how Mubarak was in power for 30 years.
“This is the kind of thing you’d expect, you know, maybe in Egypt or Syria or some country that doesn’t know democracy,” Mr. Ignatieff said. - The Globe and Mail
Conservatives claim that they were not aware of this vote and Elections Canada agreed. Michael Sona is not the guilty one here, lets not distract ourselves, he seemed to be the only one who knew the truth about Special Ballots. And although the Guelph Mercury has stated he tried to "steal" the ballot box, other sources not stated in the report say otherwise. So much for a balanced report. We have a very important election ahead of us, lets all go out there and vote on the issues. Look at the platforms of all party's and do what you think is right.

Thats a good way of putting it. Its funny how the media doesnt tell you everything.
In my opinion, it would have been more beneficial for you to observe this pre-authorized event, without VERBALLY intervening. After, you could have contacted authorities, which have the power and discretion to investigate and possibly shut the advance polling station down.
It is really quite sad what Canadian news media has come to. Where has the unbiased reporting gone? I had to read and view numerous news stories, blogs, and use my own instinct to come up with my own conclusions.
The media and other parties are jumping on absolutely anything, in order to make the conservative party look mischievous. Although I currently do not know whom I will be voting for, seeing political leaders spend money, time, and effort bashing someone who was only trying to do ‘the right thing’, is not appealing.
Look at almost all of the quotes from the U of G students- so embarrassing (that is another rant in itself)! The only reason they probably are allowing the votes to be counted is because they do not want to steer youth away from voting.
This shouldn’t have happened and it is not right that you are receiving a reputation that is not entirely truthful. Seeing how the media and Guelph citizens from the University have spoken about another Guelph resident is completely disrespectful and unfair….oh wait these voters Aren’t full time residents of Guelph (my bad). This is being completely blown out of proportion.
The only group that blame should be put on is Elections Canada. Leave it up to Elections Canada to be truly Canadian and forgiving, “it’s okay that it happened this time, but it shouldn’t happen again!” Well I guess university students are kind of like military persons, right? I apologize for my long rant; this has been irritating me, haha!
Let's not leave out the important fact here that once you register to vote by special ballot, you cannot legally vote any other way. Therefore, had these votes been nullifed, ALL of these young people would not have had another opportunity to vote, despite having participated in an act ultimately deemed legal under our federal law regarding elections.
Totally legal - your premise is false and the cited Elections Canada statement bears out the fact that though it was not pre-authorized, the ballots were cast in a manner in accordance to Elections Canada standards.
Your opening statement is wankerish and totally expected of someone whose who's party has a moral compass that is so far off true north: "It's very easy to criticize someone for a wrong-doing. After all, its human nature to put others down in order to make ourselves look good."
Even in an election campaign, that is not human nature: the rest of the country does not think that it is human nature - get a fucking life.
My premise is false? Please, prove me wrong.
I already mentioned in my post that the vote was in accordance to Elections Canada, thanks for stating that again for no rational reason. Have another read and maybe you'll have an "eureka." What other proof do you need then when Elections Canada says in a statement that the vote should not have happened in the first place without proper authorization procedures? I guess it's justifiable to have other partys handing out pamphlets at the same location, but when facts come into play, everything is forgotten. So much for a legal vote. Last time I checked, having partisan literature or visuals is not part of our "legal" vote system. They also stopped all future votes at universities for the record. Do you not remember in 2006 when former Liberal MP Tony Ianno's campaign manager shut down polling at the University of Toronto because they were upset at how the student's votes might affect his re-election? Liberals sure got their way then.
Also, I respect the comment but please leave out the language. Don't make yourself look like an asshole. That's coming from someone who tags themself as "anonymous.
